The recorded history of Craps dates back to a dice game known as Hazard, which dates all the way back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in Eightteen Thirteen. Hazard is thought to be a by-product of Azzahr, which means ‘the die’ a game enjoyed by Arabs.
The game evolved as it traveled from the Arab countries to France and then to England. By the early 18th century, cultivated game rules for Hazard had been developed. France adopted the British version of Hazard and is assumed to have been imported to the new world by early French colonizers. In the mid-Eighteenth century, when the English beat the French in Canada, the French colonizers moved to Louisiana. Dice were enjoyed on river boats, clubs and wharfs and a streamlined ‘American’ style of Craps was developed. The game headed west and is a favoured game that is competed in all over the United States and throughout the planet.
The name ‘Craps’ is theorized to be a French enunciation of the phrase crabs, which means a pair of ones. There are 2 basic forms of Craps that are wagered on-street Craps and casino Craps. Street caps, accurately named because it’s gambled on the streets is where a tosser establishes a point and then attempts to roll that point. The betting is made either for or opposed to the hurler and another player must cover the bet for the game to carry on.
In casino Craps, which is the familiar game, wagered on in betting houses, the casino backs the casino game. The participants compete against the casino-the casino covers all of the wagers of all of the players. Craps once was a very well-liked game but in the last 20 years had divided itself and other games, such as poker and black jack became even more well-known. However, Craps is experiencing a surge in recognition once again in net betting houses and in land based betting houses.
