Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
