Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
