Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
