Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
